Welcome to The Lottery’s test drive meme! Before we get to the prompts, here are a few things to note:

Though you may only have ONE active character per round, you are free to play as many characters you wish on the TDM. Later, you will have the opportunity to bench characters if you want to try another, but only after you’ve been accepted.

Please be sure to thoroughly look through our FAQ so that you have a good understanding of the game’s mechanics. Also be sure to browse the information provided on both The Attribution Study and Shiroiwa for a better idea of the setting.

The date for the next round of Reserves is: February 29th
The number of currently available character slots is: 25

Important Note: A thread of 9 comments in the TDM (with at least 5 comments from your character) will count towards both sample requirements in the application. Consider this a special bonus for getting your feet wet in our community!

If your thread does not reach the required amount of comments, it may still be used as the In-World Sample in your application.

Flashback/Background threads in the TDM may be reposted to Shiroiwa Academy’s Community if both players were accepted into the game.

Provided below are some sample scenarios, but please feel free to plot and play whatever you’d like!

Sample Scenarios:

Sample 1:

You’ve just transferred to one of the three grade levels in Shiroiwa Academy and have yet to make any friends. Sure, people showed you around, but nothing has quite stuck yet. So as the lunch bell goes off, you pull out your bento and prepare to eat alone when another student saddles up beside you. Perhaps they’re being friendly or perhaps they simply want to mooch off of your food. Whatever the reasoning, you’re now stuck in some form of communication whether you like it or not.

Sample 2:

Everyone just loves partner projects, don’t they? Your teacher has randomly assigned you a partner, and now you both must come up with a presentation to show the class. Are you the type who does all the work? Do you push for fair exchange? Or perhaps you have no plans to do any work at all. Whichever it is, your partner is now moving their stuff to sit at the desk next to you. Better gather your might and prepare to weather the oncoming storm…

Sample 3:

It’s March 14, 20XX. You have been kidnapped and taken to the island, given your randomized duffle bag, and are now either desperately seeking shelter or methodically preparing to hunt down your weaker classmates. Whatever it is, you stumble upon another student - whether you know them well or not doesn’t matter. The rules have already been made clear to both of you - only one person gets to win. You need to either escape, kill, or attempt to make a truce with this classmate. What will you do?

Sample 4:

Your weapon broke. Perhaps it snapped as you embedded it into the skull of one of your classmates, or perhaps it was simply a stroke of bad luck. You return to the hideout you created for yourself, seeking a weapon you’d taken from a fallen student. But as you near the space, you realize something is off. There is some telltale sign that another has been here… Are they still around? Will you investigate? What if your stockpile has been pilfered by another student?

[Gintoki's run into the shelter had simply been that of dumb luck. He'd spent his time skittering from one place to another. If he stayed out of sight - he wouldn't die. If he stayed out of sight, he wouldn't be thrown into a face-off where his survival instinct would force him too-

The thought stops as he hears something moving as he rounds the corner. Had someone approached? His body tenses, dead fish-eyes growing more focused as his gaze catches up with Izaya.

And has to click his tongue in disgust.]

Tch, good. Go take a nap, and I'll go to the woods and take a shit. That's the only war I'm interested in fighting, yeah?

[He's abandoned his duffle bag at this point - carrying only a dented megaphone in his hand. Sweat and dirt are stuck to his brow and every ounce of his body language suggests that he's ready to make a quick exit.]

( a humph of breath, and while the knife in his hand isn't at all aimed or held with (evident) malice, he doesn't exactly hide it, either.

though that click of tongue annoys him, just a little.
) Oh but, this isn't a war at all.

( if izaya seems disconnected with everything that's happening, it's because he is. his clothes are only moderately dirty, and there's a speck of something dark on his shoe and he doesn't remember if it's dirt of blood. instinct and survival. that's all this really was, and the annoyance of being a participant aside, it was a curious sight to see - how each person reacts to such stresses.

gintoki's body language is loud, even if izaya angles his body just a step away from him, even as he leans a shoulder against the threshold. his is far more subtle, but he's just as ready to spring. forward or back, it's hard to tell.

he was lying about being tired, but he didn't care to fight, really.

[The reassurance that this wasn't a war brings a bit of a smirk to Gintoki's lips.]

Nah? And here I thought you'd be one of the ones thinkin' that. Maybe I had you pegged all wrong then?

[Gintoki takes a step to the side, though his grip on the megaphone hasn't loosened. He even adjusts it, as if to make sure he wouldn't lose the handle would he need to take a sudden swing.]

You're not reveling in this? You might lose some of that edgy street cred you had going on.

[While Izaya may not have been tired, Gintoki certainly was. He'd been scrambling from place to place - taking care to avoid his peers by any means necessary. As much as he didn't want to die - he didn't want to kill either. So it was merely a game of survival and looking for answers as far as he was concerned.

It was simply a terrible scramble to whatever finish line awaited him.]

( that whole cool guy act izaya wears so easily doesn't so much falter as simply lifts. like a mask briefly raised, as his smirk sharpens. )

Oh, you misunderstand. War and game are two different things.

( his eyes narrow, the smile abates, drops away to something colder. no motion is lost on him (he's butted heads with shizu-chan enough to know how to dodge most things, ha-ha!) ) People like to think war has a point.

This? Is just a game. Who swings the hardest, or who cares the least, or who hides the best. ( time and time again, he would reiterate how he would have rather watched than participated, but it's an opinion he keeps to himself, for now. it's more convenient that way. and he didn't really care to watch people die. in all, it was kind of a boring, mundane idea anyway. )

I'm not reveling in being someone else's plaything, if that's what you mean. ( a shrug, too nonchalant against the bite of his statement, even as he gives an easy tip back onto his heel. carefree and unnerving, to his very last breath.

funny enough, that point was true. it was fucking annoying, and the collar was starting to scratch against his neck as a consistent.

people dying though, people killing each other....well. it was part of that whole human thing. admittedly (oddly), izaya never liked being aware of his own humanity. and above all, no, he didn't care for dying. especially not for someone else's entertainment.
) I have street cred? Haha, I didn't know!

( as smug as a cat that got in the cream, tbh. )

[Wow. How Izaya could speak and not cut himself on all that edge was an impressive talent. Gintoki blinks a few times, which was always his way of dealing with a moment of silence - as if he has a physical tick when his mind was "buffering" just what to do next.]

Ah, you didn't know? Oh, this must be some sort of humbling act. Iza-kun, don't tease me. You'll embarrass me, you know.

[And though the sentences themselves are coy, Gintoki's tone never falters from a dull delivery. He rolls his shoulders.]

I guess even you are being toyed with then, ne? Then what are you planning on doing, huh? Have you figured out how to get back at them?

[Because he sure hasn't. The idea that they were being toyed with was one of the feelings that caused his guts to twist. All he wanted to do was find some means of insubordination. Something that would upset whoever watched over them...

But.

Apparently he simply wasn't clever enough - which was even more frustrating that anything else. He scratches at the collar around his neck, wishing he could find a way to just rip the clunky thing off without it exploding.
