Welcome to The Lottery’s test drive meme! Before we get to the prompts, here are a few things to note:

Though you may only have ONE active character per round, you are free to play as many characters you wish on the TDM. Later, you will have the opportunity to bench characters if you want to try another, but only after you’ve been accepted.

Please be sure to thoroughly look through our FAQ so that you have a good understanding of the game’s mechanics. Also be sure to browse the information provided on both The Attribution Study and Shiroiwa for a better idea of the setting.

The date for the next round of Reserves is: February 29th
The number of currently available character slots is: 25

Important Note: A thread of 9 comments in the TDM (with at least 5 comments from your character) will count towards both sample requirements in the application. Consider this a special bonus for getting your feet wet in our community!

If your thread does not reach the required amount of comments, it may still be used as the In-World Sample in your application.

Flashback/Background threads in the TDM may be reposted to Shiroiwa Academy’s Community if both players were accepted into the game.

Provided below are some sample scenarios, but please feel free to plot and play whatever you’d like!

Sample Scenarios:

Sample 1:

You’ve just transferred to one of the three grade levels in Shiroiwa Academy and have yet to make any friends. Sure, people showed you around, but nothing has quite stuck yet. So as the lunch bell goes off, you pull out your bento and prepare to eat alone when another student saddles up beside you. Perhaps they’re being friendly or perhaps they simply want to mooch off of your food. Whatever the reasoning, you’re now stuck in some form of communication whether you like it or not.

Sample 2:

Everyone just loves partner projects, don’t they? Your teacher has randomly assigned you a partner, and now you both must come up with a presentation to show the class. Are you the type who does all the work? Do you push for fair exchange? Or perhaps you have no plans to do any work at all. Whichever it is, your partner is now moving their stuff to sit at the desk next to you. Better gather your might and prepare to weather the oncoming storm…

Sample 3:

It’s March 14, 20XX. You have been kidnapped and taken to the island, given your randomized duffle bag, and are now either desperately seeking shelter or methodically preparing to hunt down your weaker classmates. Whatever it is, you stumble upon another student - whether you know them well or not doesn’t matter. The rules have already been made clear to both of you - only one person gets to win. You need to either escape, kill, or attempt to make a truce with this classmate. What will you do?

Sample 4:

Your weapon broke. Perhaps it snapped as you embedded it into the skull of one of your classmates, or perhaps it was simply a stroke of bad luck. You return to the hideout you created for yourself, seeking a weapon you’d taken from a fallen student. But as you near the space, you realize something is off. There is some telltale sign that another has been here… Are they still around? Will you investigate? What if your stockpile has been pilfered by another student?

[Takasugi was not shaken. Of course, there was no way he'd expected the day to take this sort of turn, but hearing that only one of them would walk off of this island had given him a goal. Something to focus on, to expend every fiber of his mind on seeing this through to the end.

No chance to panic.

The rustling hadn't been him - an animal in the bushes scampering about. It was probably scared of this loud guy stomping his way through the forest. If that hadn't announced his presence to everyone, yelling had certainly finished the job.

Takasugi sighed. He had no intention of getting into a fight this early on, but this guy seemed just stupid enough to pilfer supplies off of. So he'd step closer, out from behind a tree several paces away from the rustling.]
A rabbit, perhaps? I doubt you could catch it...

[There's nothing threatening about his body language, shoulders relaxed with duffle slung across his back.]

fight for survival it is!

Waaghhhhhh!!!!

[Holy shit! Where did you come from!?! You weren't even close to the initial direction he was looking in! ]

Wait... a rabbit. So ya mean it could make food or something right?

[ Now that he thought about it, food sounds kind of amazing. And they were kind of stuck here right? So they had to eat sometime. ]

I heard rabbit meat's pretty tough, but it can make a good soup with the right stuff. You think we should catch it?

[ His priorities are obviously all over the place at the moment. ]

[The shriek has Takasugi squinting his eye and tilting his head away from the noise. A reflex that did nothing to dampen the sound, and as the boy's voice diminished into the foreboding silence of night Takasugi resolved that he didn't have much time.

Someone else would have heard that - maybe they'd run away, but maybe they'd charge hoping to encounter a weakened student ripe for pilfering. They wouldn't be completely wrong...

Talking to idiots was a process that required care, and now he was rushed. Takasugi kept most annoyance from his tone, but his words were laced in just a hint of exasperation. What part of 'you can't catch it' did you not understand?]

Mm, gathering supplies is a good move at this point. [Not that you're the one doing that with any efficiency, but details.] How do you suggest we go about catching it, then? [Maybe this kid had a weapon that would make that process easier, and make Takasugi's efforts of thievery worth his time.]

Catching it? It's all about stealth right? Like I guess we should probably shut up and see if the rustle happens again?

[Also with the evil-eye this guy is giving him he's wondering if it's perhaps best to simply keep quiet for his own longevity's sake.

Perhaps he'll just whisper the next part.
]

I mean there's two of us now right? And unless you got something to whack it out with on ya right now, we're probably best surrounding it so it's less likely to escape right? Then whatever it is, we can listen for it to make noises again to figure out exactly where it's at. Then we can just surrounding it and jump it in one go.

[Quieting down was the first intelligent suggestion to come from the boy's mouth, and it was for the wrong reason. Any animal would hear their footsteps and flee, if they hadn't already scattered from the idiot's voice.

Which was now, thankfully, dampened.]

Oh, do you have experience with hunting? [Yeah fucking right.] Once we surround it, one of us should chase it towards the other. That way it won't just run off into the forest.

Of course, that's if we can find something. Standing here, we won't surround anything. Once we start moving, that's it - we'll need to have it in our sight.

So... [He glanced back to the bush that had rustled.] One of us goes out there, and one of us stays here. [An ineffectual choice left up to the other, to give the illusion of control.]

Camping. My pop took me a lot when I was a kid. He was a bit of a survivalist if not a complete idiot. Pretty much the only reason I've been keeping myself afloat for this long I guess. He was also kind of paranoid about a lotta weird shit, but I guess in the end it ended up counting for something?

[Not that he ever thought that this would be how those skills would have ever helped.]

Never got this far into survival shit though... Kinda weird to think we all have'ta start hunting for our food if we wanna keep alert.

Anyway, I was here first so maybe you go out there? Then I'll sneak around the front? You're right in the fact that standing here like chumps ain't doing anything for us.
